Biography

Richard Power, 1st Baron le Power and Coroghmore was the son of Sir Piers Poer (Piers Power) and Catherine FitzGerald [1] of Decies, County Waterford.

Sir Richard Power, Knight, was in the year 1535 created by Letters Patent of King Henry VIII. Baron of Le Power and Coroghmore, in the Peerage of Ireland [2]

High Sheriff of County Waterford in 1535.[3]

Richard married Lady Katherine Butler, daughter of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormonde and Lady Margaret FitzGerald [4]. Their children included:

  • Piers Power, 2nd Baron le Power and Coroghmore, b. 1522, d.1545 unmarried[5][6]
  • John Power, 3rd Baron le Power and Coroghmore
  • Thomas Power (born ca. 1530), also known as "Thomas of Culefin", married Joan Tobin, daughter of Thomas Tobin, Lord of Compshinagh (Compsy) and they had at least 7 children.[7]. Thomas died on 10 Oct 1564.[8]
  • Katherine Power
  • Margaret Power
  • Ellen Power

Besides his 3 legitimate sons, Richard had 2 illegitimate sons, Edmund and Nicholas.[11]:

  • Edmund Power, the elder of the two illegitimate sons of Richard, Lord Power, was the last Abbot of Mothel, County Waterford, at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540.
  • Nicholas Power, the younger of the two, married, according to Carew Manuscripts 635, a daughter of Thomas Tobin[12] of the Comshie, County Tipperary, and had issue:
    • Walter Power, of Lismuen [?], County Waterford
    • Morrice (Maurice)
    • William
    • Nicholas

Richard was killed 10th November 1538, by Connor O'Callaghan, while intervening in the issue of the succession of the Earldom of Desmond.[13]
