Sir Patrick Hepburn [1] is frequently styled "of Bolton" after his estate and pele tower residence at Bolton in Haddingtonshire. He was probably born about 1494, the son of Sir Patrick Hepburn of Dunsyre and his second wife Lady Margaret. He was designate tutor-lawful and heir of Patrick, Earl of Bothwell, his nephew on 27 May 1515. He signed his name as 'Patrick, Master of Hailes' on that date.[2]
In September 1516 he was Sheriff of Haddingtonshire, in 1517 he is mentioned as Admiral-Depute. On 12th September 1541 he is mentioned as Sheriff of Berwickshire. He died on 31st October 1576.[3] In June 1526 he harboured rebels in his tower of Boltoun, which was burnt by the forces sent by King James V.[4] On 6 April 1529 he had a remission for treasonable assistance given to the Homes.[5] On 12 Septemer 1541 he was Sheriff of Berwick for the time.[6]
He married first to Dame Nicholas Home, Lady Herries, the daughter of Alexander, Lord Home and Nicholas Ker. She was the relict of Andrew, Lord Herries.[7] Patrick married secondly to Katherine Fleming who survived him.[8]

He died on 31 October 1576, his testament confirmed 23 October 1577.[9]
