Biography

On 13 July, 1234, at Westminster, the barons of the Exchequer, at the petition of the king’s beloved and faithful Fulk fitz Warin, the king (Henry III) has granted to Master Robert of Stafford the custody of the land and heirs of William Pantulf, with the marriage of the heirs, to have until the full age of the heirs by the same fine that Fulk made with the king by rendering 600 marks to him, and in the form in which the king had previously granted it to Fulk, so that the king has granted to Master Robert that he may begin to render 50 marks of the aforesaid fine at the Exchequer of Easter in the nineteenth year, 50 marks at the Exchequer of Michaelmas in the same year, and 50 marks thus at the same terms each year until he will have paid all the aforesaid fine to the king. Order to cause this to be done and enrolled thus.[1]

On 11 June, 1244, at St Albans, the king (Henry III) has granted to Robert of Stafford that he is to render £17 to him per annum, namely one moiety at the Exchequer of Michaelmas in the twenty-eighth year and the other moiety at the Exchequer of Easter in the following year, and £17 thus from year to year at the same terms until the debt is paid to the king, for the debts which he owes him both for Hervey, his brother, and for other things. Order to the barons of the Exchequer to cause this to be done and enrolled thus.[2]

On 18 December, 1246, at Clarendon, the king (Henry III) granted to Robert of Stafford, brother and heir of Hervey of Stafford, that, of the debts which he owes him and concerning which the king had previously granted him that he was to render £17 per annum, he is henceforth to render £10 per annum, namely 100s. at the Exchequer of Easter in the thirty-first year, 100s. at the Exchequer of Michaelmas in the same year, and £10 thus from year to year at the same terms until those debts are paid to the king. Order to the barons of the Exchequer to cause this to be done and enrolled thus.[3]

Occupation

Baron Stafford[4]

Robert inherited the Barony upon the death of his childless older brother, Hervey. Baron Robert of Stafford, who in the 25th year of Henry III, 1241, upon doing homage and paying £100 for his relief, had livery of his lands. This feudal lord was in the wars of Gascogne, during the 38th year of His Majesty, Henry III, 1254, and in four years afterwards, 1258, he had a military summons to march against the Welsh. He married Alice, one of the daughters and co-heir of Thomas Corbet, of Caus, Shropshire, and dying in 1282, was succeeded by his son, Baron Nicholas of Stafford.[5]

Family

Robert de Stafford, son of Hervey Bagot de Stafford & his wife Pernell de Ferrers, married (1) Alice Corbet, daughter of Thomas Corbet of Caus, Shropshire, (2) Joan. By his first wife, Alice, he had Nicholas de Stafford, his heir.[6]

Appears he also had a daughter named Matilda, who had a granddaughter named Nichola, heiress of Langebride, in Long Bredy, Dorset, possible mother of Sir Robert de London of Long Bredy, Dorset. Unclear from source if Alice Corbet is Matilda's mother.
