| Marguerite Katzenberg lived in Louisiana. Join: Louisiana Families Project Discuss: louisiana |
Marguerite Katzenberg was born about 9 May 1751, supposedly in the Holy Roman Empire, if so, probably in an area near the border of present-day France and Germany. She was possibly a daughter of Johann Caspar Katzenberger (~1700 - ) and Marie Christine DuRoche (~1710 - 1801). However, recent analysis of the records has lead to the conclusion that her mother was Marie Anne Evera, and she was born in Louisiana, where her parents resided.[1]
Marguerite did marry Michel Deville (c.1738 - 1793) in New Orleans,[2] reportedly on 19 April 1768, according to the reported inscription on his gravestone.[3] The church record has deteriorated such that it can only give an approximate date. Like his wife's memorial, there is no photo of the gravestone, so it is not certain if this date is truly inscribed on his gravestone. The reported inscription on Marguerite's gravestone is so long that it seems unlikely.[4]

Marguerite died about 1795 in Post du Rapides, Louisiana, New Spain, aged about 44.[4]
When first adopted, this profile had only one source, the FindAGrave memorial for Margarita Juana Castenbergue De Ville.Unfortunately, this memorial lacks a source for its information; there is not even a gravestone photo. According to FindAGrave, Marguerite was born 9 May 1751 in Elbers, Germany.[4] It's not clear how they obtained that date of birth, and I'm unable to find a place called Elbers, Germany, although there is a major river called the Elbe. All that was known for certain was that she was married to Michel Deville.
Prior managers indicated her father was Johann Caspar Kastenberger, but he seems to already be in Louisiana by her date of birth and married to Marie Anne Evera.[8] So either he is not her father or she might be the Margueritte Casberg baptized 17 August 1751 in New Orleans.[1] This does indicate her father was named Jean and her mother Marianne Jeanlouis, an odd surname for sure, but it is seen in another record in the Archdiocese of New Orleans Sacramental Records books.[9]
Her marriage record is also in such poor condition that her father's first name is uncertain, but her mother's is clearly Marie Anne DuRoche, which differs from the surname in the baptism record previously cited. But the mother of Marie Anne Evera, the known wife of Johann Caspar Katzenberger, is named Marie Deroche and her father was named Jean Louis, the supposed surname of the Margueritte Casberg baptized in New Orleans. The good fathers who recorded vital events seem often to have used a woman's father's first name in place of her maiden name, but I have never seen a scholarly discussion of the practice. --Ward-9858 17:21, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
It seems possible that she is the daughter of Johann Caspar Katzenberger and Marie Anne Evera and errors were made in both the baptism and marriage record in terms of Marguerite's mother's parents.

It seems that the correct explanation is given in the last paragraph of the above Research Notes - Marguerite was the child born to Johann Caspar Katzenberger and Marie Anne Evera and baptized in 1751; her birth date could indeed be 05/09/1751, since her baptism was in August. Her mother's name was given as JEANLOUIS, but I agree this was simply the name of her father. A confusing set of entries, to be sure. --Sanders-9960 14:20, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
