Research Notes

Charles Stanley Gifford is widely believed to be the father of Marilyn Monroe.

Stanley Gifford is a descendant of John Alden and Francis Cooke of the Mayflower, 1620.[10]

James_Stratman_-_Images-23.jpg
Over the past two years Francois Pomès dedicated himself to solving one of the great mysteries to America's greatest acting icon, Marilyn Monroe, that is, who was her true biological father? The one hour documentary directed by Francois, is based off the DNA research that was conducted by a molecular archaeology expert, Ludovic Orlando. Orlando obtained a hair sample to extract her DNA profile from the renown auctioneer and authenticator, John Reznikoff. Orlando also acquired saliva samples via cheek swabs from the granddaughter Francine Gifford and from the great-granddaughter, Lisa, of Monroe’s suspected father, Charles Stanley Gifford. In June 2022 the documentary, "Marilyn Her Final Secret" or the original title, "MARILYN, LA DERNIERE VERITE.' was released in France on Toute l’Histoire.
The key geneticists and scientists in this research were Ludovic Orlando, PhD. Andaine Sequin-Orlando,PhD, and Rachel Houston, PhD
The following is the methodology and final results of this revealing research:

  • Two sets of samples were provided. One set to Ludovic Orlando at Toulouse, France and the other set to Rachel Houston at Huntsville, Texas. Ludovic Orlando received the hair sample from Marilyn's embalmer, Allan Abbott along with the Gifford saliva samples. Rachel Houston received the hair sample from Marilyn's hair dresser, Robert Champion along with the Gifford saliva samples. The origin of these hair samples were kept secret from the scientists and identified as only 'hair girl'. It wasn't until the results were known that the identity of the hair belonging to Marilyn Monroe was revealed.
  • The sample sent to Dr. Rachel Houston's lab in Huntsville was carefully analyzed. The keratin of the hair shaft is most difficult when it comes to extracting DNA. What DNA exists are small amounts and damaged. DNA mostly resides in the roots of the hair. This research facility is capable of deciphering damaged DNA in human or body hair. However, discovering any DNA from this sample proved futile, and no conclusive evidence found. Interestingly, an article was recently posted that claimed the hair sample sent to the Huntsville facility was fake. It was claimed that Robert Champion did not actually cut Marilyn's hair for JFK's birthday gala event, but rather it would have been cut by Kenneth Battelle. This hair was given by John Reznikoff, renowned hair authenticator and collector, https://nypost.com/2022/05/09/kim-kardashian-gifted-fake-marilyn-hair-monroe-expert-claims/. This has no bearing on the final results. Dr. Houston's research lab was unable to locate any of Marilyn's DNA from that sample given by John Reznikoff.
  • The last opportuntity was now with Ludovic Orlando and his team of experts at his lab in the Centre for Anthropobiology and Genomics of Toulouse (CAGT). His sample also provided by John Reznikoff was from Marilyn's embalmer, Allan Abbott. The painstaking process was conducted by researcher and geneticist, , Andaine Seguin, Associate Professor of Paleogenomics. She led the extraction process where the hair samples are first cleaned, removing any contaminates and then added an enzyme solution to break down the proteins and completely dissolve the strand of hair. Any potential DNA is now in liquid form inside the tubes. Scientists amplify it to make it visible to their detection system. This process which destroys the sample means they are only given one chance to discover any DNA.
  • This research was met with success. The lab was able to get enough DNA for this genome. Only 5% of the molecules from these three hairs were found to be human. This provided 5% of billions of sequences which provided enough sequences to identify a significant amount of 'Hair Girl's (Marilyn's) DNA. This was then put through high speed sequencing to read each letters of the strands of DNA. The results exceeded expectation. from the sample 22% of the genome could be decoded. In the 22% of the three billion letters, a signature was observed typical of someone of European lineage. Francine's DNA shows the same European signature. However, so do millions of other people. The question still remained does the DNA from the hair sample relate to the DNA sent from Francine Gifford's saliva? To do that they needed to look at what text lines the two had in common.
  • What the data showed was that irrefutably there was lineage between Francine Gifford and Marilyn Monroe going back three generations. To confirm several statistical methods were used to compare. They revealed that the genes were in common because they have a common ancestor, Stanley Gifford. A three generational difference would be the equivalent of a great grandparent or a half-aunt in terms of the amount of cM. For a half aunt and a great grandparent the amount of cM are about the same, in the 870-880 range on average. A great grandparent would be three generations away from Francine which means that a half-aunt cM amount fits perfectly as that is how Mariilyn Monroe would relate to Francine (since they descend from different mothers), and the lab results read this as three generational. The risk factor of this being a false-positive was about 1 in 46 billion.
  • Upon conclusion when Ludovic Orlando was interviewed the hair was revealed to him as belonging to Marilyn Monroe. When asked how certain he was of the final results he used such terms as, "100 percent certain", and, "irrefutable evidence".

Why is Gifford shown here as husband of Gladys Monroe? They were never married even though it appears they had a child together.

Charles Stanley Gifford is my 6th cousin

Marilyn's my 7th cousin twice removed from her dad's mom's side- Elizabeth Easton Tennant via Church/Pope. That's the closest relation but there are more shared with her family tree, Borden, Congdon, Hazard, etc.

I am angered that Sara Mosher would post such misinformation.

I am another niece to Marilyn Monroe and MY GRANDMOTHER was Charles Stanley Gifford's SECOND WIFE, Mary Belle Seiwell is his THIRD and last marriage. There is a very public article from 1987 talking about my grandmother and I have argued with author Anthony Summers of the book Goddess to give me the file on my grandmother but he won't admit what he knows happened to her, my grandmother died young and why Charles left Hollywood to run a dairy farm later with Mary his THIRD WIFE. The Reimers know what happened to my grandmother but it's been difficult finding them. I had arguments with CHRISTELLE at a MarilynMonroe blog for withholding information from me and a MELANIE CLAISSE also known as "Melsey" who runs Everlasting-Star. Sara, perhaps you simply didn't know any better but many people have known me since at least 2015 and I get tired of the few who disrespect the memory of my grandmother who deserves to be remembered.

Thanks Paula. I added the category for the Cemetery, but I’m not part of the Notables Project and I’m not sure Stanley Gifford would qualify.
