The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Biographies from Find A Grave:

"Danger Nick"

Nickolas was called "Danger" because it was said he had an irascible temper. "Danger" came to Perry County in 1790's, probably at the same time as his brother John. He came through Pound Gap, from around Holston where he had been living for some time and settled on the North Fork of the Kentucky River, near what is now Combs, KY. He was one of the largest land owners in Perry Co. at that time. He received his first land grant in 1810 when this was Clay County and he had other grants on Ball Creek, Lotts Creek, Combs Mill, and Trace Creek.
He remained a Troy and tradition says that because of this he became unpopular with other Combs. "Danger" Nick died in Perry County near 1838. He is buried in the Old Combs Cemetery on Meadow Branch Near Combs Bends.

Revolutionary War Service

Nicholas applied for a pension on 14 November 1845 in Perry County, Kentucky based on his service in the Revolutionary War.[7] He stated he enlisted about ten or eleven months before the end of the war in the County of Surry, North Carolina, in the Company commanded by Capt. Wm. T. LEWIS in the Line of the State of North Carolina or on Continental Establishment in the Regiment commanded by Col. Martin ARMSTRONG.

This pension claim took years to resolve. It was disallowed under the Act of 15 May, 1828 and in October 1854 Chas C. Tucker was given Power of Attorney by Nicholas Combs to re-file the claim under the Act of June 7, 1832. This Power of Attorney was revoked and a new one given to William M. Fulkerson on 17 December 1855. As of 10 September 1856, the claim had still not been approved.[8] The claim may have become moot when Nicholas died about 1857-1858.

He also died about 20 year later in 1859. He is one of the eight brothers born to John Combs & Nancy Hardingand not an uncle to them. His wife Nancy Euphemia Grigsby is about 3-10 years his elder and she had a daughter Nancy Elitia prior to their marriage. Stories have it that Nick was a known Tory and trouble maker and may have been on the run for murder which is why he left Virginia. I believe that he signed allegiance to these United States towards the end of the war. Besides his step or adopted daughter Nancy Elitia, he had 4 possibly 5 known children with his wife- Jeremiah "Chunky Jerry", Nicholas "Bird Eye", Rebecca, Samuel & Millie?.http://www.combs-families.org/combs/families/c-n1736.htm----------------------------------------------------------- "Danger Nick" Nickolas was called "Danger" because it was said he had an irascible temper. Combs-437 and Combs-613 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents. I don't think they would have had 2 sons named Nicholas with the same nickname.
Nicholas is not the son of Mason Combs and Sarah Nelson. He is grandson, son of John Combs-434, "one of the original eight" Combs brothers who settled in Perry Co., KY. See http://www.combs-families.org/combs/families/c-n1736.htm for explanation of wrong birth and death dates.
