Sylvanus Smith was born 24 Feb 1759, son of Jonathan Smith and Anna Chipman, baptized at Haddam Neck, Middlesex, CT, on 6 May 1759. [1][2][3]
Sylvanus served in the Connecticut Continental Line during the American Revolution. According to his 1819 pension application, he first served one year (January 1776-January 1777) as a private in Capt. Jedidiah Huntington's unit. He reenlisted in Huntington's unit in June 1777 and was discharged in April 1780. In February 1780 he had been promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant.
Sylvanus married Lydia Clark on 21 May 1782, in Connecticut. Soon after their marriage, the couple moved to Massachusetts. By 1820, they had moved again to Dover Township (now Westlake), Cuyahoga County, Ohio, as had Sylvanus' brothers Abner and Jonathan.
