Richard John Seddon was born in Eccleston, Lancashire, England, on 22 June 1845. His father was Thomas Seddon, headmaster of Eccleston grammar school and his mother was Jane Lindsay (Seddon), a Scot from Annan, Dumfriesshire, and the teacher at the Eccleston denominational school. When she married her school closed. Richard had an elder brother and two sisters; two other siblings died in infancy. The family was brought up in the Anglican Church. He became engaged to Louisa Jane Spotswood around 1865/66 in Melbourne, Australia. They married on 13 Jan 1869 in Trinity Church, Williamstown, Melbourne. Shortly thereafter they sailed for the Waimea gold fileds of Westland, West Coast, New Zealand.
He had eleven children all born on the West Coast of New Zealand with nine (six daughters and three sons) surviving. Two daughters who died young are buried in the Stafford Cemetery
