Richard John Seddon was born in Eccleston, Lancashire, England, on 22 June 1845. His father was Thomas Seddon, headmaster of Eccleston grammar school and his mother was Jane Lindsay (Seddon), a Scot from Annan, Dumfriesshire, and the teacher at the Eccleston denominational school. When she married her school closed. Richard had an elder brother and two sisters; two other siblings died in infancy. The family was brought up in the Anglican Church. Richard John was christened on 13 July 1845 at Christ Church, Eccleston.

In 1863, Richard worked his passage from England to Melbourne, Australia on the Star of England.

He became engaged to Louisa Jane Spotswood around 1865/66 in Melbourne, Australia. They married on 13 Jan 1869 in Trinity Church, Williamstown, Melbourne. Shortly thereafter they sailed for the Waimea gold fileds of Westland, West Coast, New Zealand.

He had eleven children all born on the West Coast of New Zealand with nine (six daughters and three sons) surviving. Two daughters who died young are buried in the Stafford Cemetery

The Rt. Hon. Richard J. Seddon died suddenly of heart failure on 10 June 1906 while at sea on board the Oswestry Grange. The ship was on its way from Sydney, Australia to Wellington, New Zealand. His wife, a son and a daughter were with him at the time of his passing.

Richard John Seddon's Memorial is located on the original site of Wellington's first Time Service Observatory at the Kinross Street entrance to the Bolton Street Cemetery. Located under the memorial is the Seddon family tomb.

Richard John Seddon (22 June 1845 – 10 June 1906), sometimes known as King Dick, is to date the longest serving Prime Minister of New Zealand. He is regarded by some, including historian Keith Sinclair, as one of New Zealand's greatest political leaders.
