Biography

James (Boyd) Hay Fifteenth Earl of Erroll is a member of Clan Hay.

James Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll (20 April 1726 – 3 July 1778) was the son of William Boyd, 4th Earl of Kilmarnock and Anne Livingston and was baptised in the parish of Falkirk, Stirlingshire on 25 April 1727.[1]

He was born with the name of James Boyd but legally changed it to James Hay in 1758, when he succeeded his great-aunt as Earl of Erroll (his father's titles were attainted and thus he did not succeed to them). He was allowed to succeed to his father's estates but not the Earldom of Kilmarnock, which had been forfeited when his father was executed for treason 18 Aug 1746; Grand Master of Scottish Freemasons 1751-52; a Lord of Police for Scotland 1770-78; a Representative Peer (Tory) for Scotland 1770-74.[2]

In 1749, he married Rebecca Lockhart (died 1761), by whom he had at least one daughter:

Lady Mary Hay (1754–?), married John Scott of Balcomie in 1770, divorced in 1771. She then 'married' James Sutherland in 1771. There are records for an earlier daughter, Mary, born 1751, but likely she died young.

In 1762, he married Isabella Carr (1747–1808) and they had twelve children:

George Hay, 16th Earl of Erroll (1767–1798)
William Hay, 17th Earl of Erroll (1772–1819)
Hon. James Hay (d. 1797)
Lady Charlotte Hay (1763–1800), married Rev. William Holwell in 1797
Lady Isabella Anne Hay (1765–1793)
Lady Augusta Hay (1766–1822), married George Boyle, 4th Earl of Glasgow
Lady Harriet Jane Hay (1768–1812)
Lady Margaret Hay (1769–1832), married Charles Cameron in 1789
Lady Maria Elizabeth Hay (1771–1804), married Rev. George Moore in 1795
Lady Frances Hay (1773–1806)
Lady Flaminia Hay (1774–1821), married Capt. George James (d. 1840) in 1809
Lady Jemima Hay (1776–1822)[3]

He died at Callendar House in Falkirk on 3 July 1778[4]
