Lord of Baynard and Little Dunmow, and Steward to King Henry I.
Priory of St Neot, Cambridgeshire, England
Robert, 5th son of Richard FitzGilbert, Earl of Clare (ancestor of the Earls of Hertford), was steward to Kings Henry I and Stephen.[1]
He was granted the Barony of Little Dunmow in Essex, and the honour of Baynard Castle, in the city of London, after William Baynard was disinherited of them in 1110.[2]
He married (1112) Maud, daughter of Simon de St. Liz, Earl of Huntingdon and Northmapton. She out-lived Robert and re-married to Saher de Quincy.[1] Robert and Maud had 1 son and 1 daughter:
Robert fitzRichard died after 28 November 1137 and was buried at the Priory of St Neots, Cambridgeshire, England.[1]
The FitzWalters of Daventry are not descended from Robert fitz Richard.
In general it should be noted that "fitz" simply means "son of" in the 12th century, and so un-related people could be described as "fitz Walter" etc.
Concerning the parents Richard FitzGilbert, lord of Clare, son of Gilbert FitzGodfrey, born about 1030-35. He married Rohese (or Rohais, Rohaidi, Roaxdis) Giffard, daughter of Walter Giffard, by Agnes, daughter of Gerard Flaitel) or Fleitel). They had six sons, Roger, Gilbert, Walter, Richard [Abbot of Ely], Robert, and Godfrey,* and four daughters, Rohese, Alice (wife of Walter Tirel), and Avice.*
