Stuart Garson was a lawyer, politician and the 13th premier of Manitoba.
Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, he was the son of William C. W. Garson and Margaret Sophia Annable. [1]His family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, when he was a child. [2][3]
After graduating from the Manitoba Law School, he practiced law in Ashern and Eriksdale, Manitoba. He entered provincial politics as a Progressive MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) for the riding of Fairford in 1927. He was a founding member of the Liberal-Progressive coalition in 1932, In 1936 he became provincial treasurer and in 1943 premier.
He married Emily Joyce Topper in Winnipeg in 1933.[4] They had two daughters, Marjorie and Eleanor.[5]
After losing his seat in the 1957 election, Stuart Garson retired from politics. He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1971.
He died in 1977 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery.[6]
