Biography

Abiah (Hough) Marshall is related to US President Grover Cleveland. Here is the trail.

Abiah Hough, born at New London, Connecticut, 3 October 1690,[1] the third daughter of Capt. John Hough and Sarah Post of New London, was a granddaughter of John Post the first, and Hester Hyde, of Norwich. She is the 3rd great-grandmother of Grover Cleveland, the 22nd President of the United States.[2]

On November 18, 1708, she married Abial Marshall of Norwich, Connecticut.[3] They settled at Norwich, where she died.

Their children were :

  1. Abial Marshall, born September 30, 1715, at Norwich, Connecticut. He married firstly, July 12, 1743, Anne Waterman, and married secondly Sybil, who died September 7, 1796, aged 74 years. He died December 1, 1799, at Bozrah, Connecticut.
  2. John Marshall, born March 25, 1718, at Norwich, Connecticut.
  3. Thomas Marshall, born July 1, 1724, at Norwich, Connecticut. He married Anne Manwaring.
  4. Anne Marshall, born August 16, 1711, at Norwich, Connecticut. She married Noah Abel.
  5. Sarah Marshall, born September 7, 1713, at Norwich, Connecticut. She died in July, 1719.
  6. Sarah Marshall, second, born April 12, 1720, at Norwich, Connecticut. She married her mother's second cousin, James Hyde, third son of John Hyde and Experience Abel of Norwich, Connecticut.

After Abiah's death, Abiel married her second cousin, Anne Hyde on 12 July 1743 in Norwich-Bozrah, Connecticut. Anne was the widow of John Waterman, and died June 1, 1758. He had no issue by her.

Disputed Death date

From a merged profile managed by Joe Kenworthy, there was a death date of 1720. We have proof that she was living in 1724 as she had a son named Thomas. Also, we know that after her death, her husband remarried. That marriage would have been earlier had she died in 1720, as there would have been young children that needed care. No source for her death has been found at this time. WikiTree-6 15:03, 20 February 2017 (EST)

Disputed death date: I have reviewed my records and sources which include data from acknowledged Hough researchers. None provide a date of death. As stated it has to be after 1724 and prior to 1743 as shown in the original profile prior to merger. Trees on Ancestry show both the 1720 date and also 1724 but with no primary source.
