Biography

Charles (Hamilton) Douglas-Hamilton RN is a member of Clan Douglas.
European Aristocracy
Capt. Charles Hamilton was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Charles Henry Hamilton was born on 7 October 1808, the second son of Augustus Barrington Price Powell Hamilton and his wife Maria Catherine Hyde, and was baptised on 15 November of that year at St George, Hanover Square, Westminster[1].

His father was the grandson of Lord Anne Hamilton, the youngest son of James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton[2].

Like his father he entered the Royal Navy on 15 October 1822, passing his examination in 1829 and obtained his first commission 9 July 1831[3].

He married Anna Abthorp (the daughter of Reverend Frederick Abthorp and Susan Hubbard) on 1 December 1854. She died in February 1856, without issue.

Charles married, secondly, Elizabeth Ann Hill on 31 January 1860.

They had the following children:

  1. Lady Helen Augusta Charlotte Constance Sidney Hamilton (b. 1860, d. 4 Aug 1950)
  2. Alfred Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 13th Duke of Hamilton (b. 6 Mar 1862, d. 16 Mar 1940)
  3. Lady Isobel Frances Ulrica Iris Hamilton (b. 1864, d. 1 Oct 1941)
  4. Lady Flora Maria Ida Hamilton (b. 1866, d. 27 Jan 1957)

His wife Elizabeth passed away in 1867.

His third married was to Sarah Julia Spence (the daughter of Captain Samuel Spence and Charlotte Spence) on 21 October 1873.

He passed away soon after, on 30 November 1873, and was buried at St. Blasius Churchyard, Shanklin, Isle of Wight Unitary Authority, Isle of Wight, England[4].

His will was proved on 18 February 1874 at the Principal Registry to Sarah-Julia Douglas-Hamilton[5].
