Birth

George Buck was born in Germany on January 14, 1740[1], and was baptised on January 24th[2]. and with his parents [Buck-4746|Friederich Buck]] and Mary Maker and brother Phillip immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sometime around 1744. George and his parents eventually settled in New York while his brother Phillip went back to Pennsylvania. After the Revolutionary War, as a Loyalist (Loyal to the King) George relocated to Canada.

Marriage

George Buck married Elizabeth HOPP Abt. 1765 in New York, daughter of Jan Hopp and Elizabeth KASEBY. She was born May 1742 in Dutchess, New York, and died September 10, 1823 in Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada.

Military

During the American revolution George assisted and directed people involved in spying for the British forces. He was unable to serve in the army because he had been crippled as a result of a broken leg.
George was a United Empire Loyalist, Order in Council, 7 April 1807. It shows in records that he drew rations for his wife, himself, and a family, which consisted of "2 sons over the age of 10, 2 sons under 10, 4 daughters over 10, and 2 daughters under 10."[3] After the war he moved with his family to Kingston, Ontario. He drew 3 lots on 4 July 1785: Lot 18. 4 Con. - Lot 5. 4 Con. - Lot 10. 4 Con. George had a Crown Deed for Lot 24 in 4 Con. Kingston Township.

"#1190 Claim of George Buck, late of Tryon Co. Lodged in England by Capt. Gomersal. Michl Grass, Wits. Says Claiment has met with an accident lately, which has made him quite a cripple. He is unable to travel to Montreal. He is a native of Germany. Came to America quite a child lived in Tryon County. He was then a cripple & could not serve, but he was very Loyal. Went to Canada in ‘81 on acct. of his Loyalty. He was driven from his Farm by the Rebels. He now resides at Cataraqui. Witness speaks very favourable of him."[4]
"He had no Land of his own but was on hired land. He lost a horse & a colt & cow & some grain. Witness remembers that he had the horse, colt & cow & thinks that he lost them by being driven from his place. He came into Canada helpless & Stript of all his property."[4]

Residence

They moved to Kingston Township in 1784 where they raised their eleven children.

Death

George lived until about 1807. When Elizabeth died about 1830(?), she left 11 children, 39 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. The descendant to be mentioned most is George Buck junior, born in 1770 and married to Ann (Hannah) Snook, daughter of Martin Snook and Elizabeth Schauerman, both Loyalists

  • “I, Adam Buck, of the Township of Kingston, yeoman, devisee of the last Will and Testament of George Buck, deceased, lay my claim to the west half of Lot #3 in the Third Concession of the township of Kingston, on the north end of Lot # 10 in the Fifth Concession of the township of Kingston, County of Frontenac, Midland District, Province of Upper Canada, containing about 200 acres . … to those persons who may be entitled to obtain lands in the province, as heirs or devices of the nominees of the crown in cases were no patent has issued for such lands for the purpose of establishing my title there to as devisee of the late George Buck, deceased, who was the original nominee of said Land. Dated 1 January 1808.”
