He married Catherine Hopkins, daughter of Sampson Hopkins of Coventry. Names her father Samuel, not Sampson[1] They were parents of three daughter, Katherine, Mary and Elizabeth, [2] and two sons, Robert and John. [1]
He was imprisoned in the Tower of London in May 1640 with three other aldermen, Nicholas Rainton, Thomas Soame and Thomas Atkins, for refusing to list the inhabitants of his ward who were able to contribute £50 or more to a loan for King Charles but was knighted on the 3rd of December 1641 at Hampton Court [3] and elected Lord Mayor of London in 1646. [4]
