Richard Edgcumbe, the eldest son of Piers Edgcumbe [1] of Mount Edgcumbe and his wife, Mary Glanville was baptised on 13 February 1640. [1]He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford and entered Parliament as MP for Launceston in 1661. [1]He was not particularly active except regarding local matters and was regarded as one who would usually vote for supply.[1]
He married in 1671 Anne Montagu [2] daughter of Edward, Earl of Sandwich [1]and his wife, Jemima Crew, who bore him three sons and six daughters.[1] In 1677 Richard entertained King Charles and the court at Mount Edgecumbe but Shaftesbury was beginning to think of him as worthy though this did not last and Richard was absent from the division on the Exclusion Bill in 1679. The King died in February 1685 and his catholic brother James II ascended the throne. Having given negative replies to the repeals of the Test Act and the Penal Laws against Catholics and being afflicted with gout he did not seek re-election. [1] Richard died in 1688 and was buried at Maker on 3rd April that year. [1]
