Biography

Jonathan was born about 1689.

He married Mary Wood on 07 February 1723 in Little Compton.^[1]

Jonathan was from Westport, Bristol, Province of Massachusetts Bay, where his wife Mary and their eight children lived on the family farm located on the east side of the Westport River, 2.5 miles from the village center.

The will of Jonathan Sisson of Dartmouth, yeoman, is dated 14 March 1755; it was proved 6 May 1755.^[2] The will names:

• sons William Sisson, Jonathan Sisson, John Sisson, James Sisson, Stephen Sisson (the last under 21 years old)
• daughters Lydia Talman, Desire Sisson, and Hannah Sisson
• son Jonathan was executor, while brother-in-law William Wood was named overseer.

Research Notes

Death Year

Many sources indicate a death year of 1775. This includes a huge number of online trees, but it also includes published works such as Carol Clark Johnson, Fullers, Sissons and Scotts : our yeoman ancestors : 46 New England and New York families (viewable at Ancesty.com), page 126. Clark even gives a citation for Jonathan's will, which was proved in 1755. It is not known who first made this error, but it was seemingly just a simple typo with a '7' substituted for a '5' that has since been copied.
