Biography

The second wife of Edmund Chandler, has neither a known given or a known surname. She died before he wrote his will in 1662.[1]

Her children are estimated born between 1632 and 1648. Because of these births she was probably younger that Edmund born about 1610.

Most sources assume daughters Sarah, Anna and Mary (all named together in their father's will) were by his second wife. However, there is no reason to believe this. The fact daughter Ruth was listed separate from the other three daughters is a weak indication that Ruth was by a different mother than the other three. Ruth is believed to be the youngest of Edmund's children, so would have been by his second wife.

Children:

  • 1. John Chandler b. say 1632; In 1653, at sea bound for Barbadoes, he left his estate to his father
  • 2. Sarah Chandler b. say 1638; named in her father's will. No further record.
  • 3. Anna Chandler b. say 1640; named in her father's will. No further record.
  • 4. Mary Chandler, b. say 1642; named in her father's will. No further record.
  • 5. Benjamin Chandler b. say 1644; m. Elizabeth Buck
  • 6. Joseph Chandler b. say 1646; m. by 1673 Mercy _____________
  • 7. Ruth Chandler b. say 1648; named in her father's will. No further record.

Her name will be changed to first name Unknown; Anderson is the source PGM relies upon, and he says her name was not known.

I adopted this profile with the name Elizabeth entered by another genealogist. My aunt (Elizabeth's 8G-granddaughter) also identified her as Elizabeth. My deceased aunt cannot reveal her sources; but she was employed as the secretary for the Duxbury, Massachusetts, town clerk for decades, with incentive and opportunity for research while active in the Mayflower and Plimouth Plantation historical societies.

Elizabeth is the most common given name for her other grandmothers of that time and place, appearing half again as frequently as Mary or Ann; but no parents named their daughters "Unknown". While I have no objection to an adding an explanatory note regarding uncertainly, profiles for individuals identified only as Unknown Unknown seem counterproductive to database functionality.

Why do you think it should be Elizabeth? Show me the record that calls her Elizabeth?
