Biography

Jarvis was born about 1605, based on his age of 30 in 1635.[1] Anderson, in Jarvice's Great Migration Article lists no origin or parents for Jarvis. No place and no one is mentioned by Benjamin Gould in Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield.

Because Clement Bates came from Lydd, it is believed that Jarvis, his servant may also have come from Lydd. However, so far researchers have not found any records in Lydd for Jarvis or any family by the name of Gould.

Jarvice Gold, age 30, servant to Clement Bate, tailor, embarked on the Elizabeth (Mr. Wm. Stagg master) for New England on April 6, 1635. On the 9th of April Edward Gold, age 28, also embarked on the Elizabeth. [1] For this reason, it is often assumed that they were brothers, although there is no direct evidence.[2] Jarvis Gould immigrated in 1635 to Hingham, Plymouth Co, Massachusetts from Kent Co., England. He came on the Elizabeth "Theis p'ties imbarqued in the Eliz: Mr. Stagg bound for New England p'r Cert from the Justice and Ministers of ye p'ish." Clement Bates and wife both age 40 and their 5 children, Jo: Wynchester, age 19 and Jervice Gold "Servantes," age 30. "The scribe made a brace against Jo: Wynchester, and began to write servant against that name, but stopped when he had written se and wrote servants against Jervice Gold." [3]

Jarvis, a shoemaker or cordwainer, settled first at Hingham, but by 1646, he had moved to Boston. He had several parcels of land in Hingham the first being a five acre houselot on 3 July 1636,[2] on Town Street (south near Hersey Street) Hingham, Massachusetts which he afterwards sold to Thomas Lincoln, the weaver, as appears by the will of the latter. Whether Jarvis was a resident here for any length of time is somewhat doubtful. The early records of Boston, however, designate him as of the church of Hingham. [4]

Jarvis had a wife Mary, who was admitted to the Hingham church and then recommended to the church in Boston, August 1646.[2]

Jarvis Goold died 27th - 3rd month 1656 (1655/56) (27 May 1656), in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts[5] An inventory of his estate was taken, 4 July 1656 and totalled £66 8s 7d. Subsequent to his death land in Boston, belonging to Jarvis was sold to benefit his heir John Gold.[2]

"Inventory of the goods of Jarvis Gould, deceased, of Boston, shoomaker, 4th July 1656. Amt. £66. 08. 07. Jn| Parke, Alexander Adams, Henry Bridgam & Edward Goodwin, deposed 8 July 1656." [6]

His four joint administrators and executors bought of Thomas Clarke of Boston, 7 Feb 1656/7, a piece of land for the use of John Gold, Jarvice's son and heir, paying for it in personal estate. This son John was then ten years old, and it may be inferred that neither the younger son, Joseph, nor his mother Mary were then living. [7]

Children:

  1. John Gould, bp Boston 30 August 1646, about 33 days old.[2]
  2. Joseph gould bp Boston 25 March 1648/9, about 14 days old; no further record[2]

Research Notes

Likely Christening record for Jarvis.- Gervnase Gould christened 16 Aug 1601 Smarden, Kent, England (just over 23 miles from Lydd and less than 4 miles from Biddenden.) [8]

Did Jarvis possibly have a first wife and son who died in England before he came to America?

Possible wife (first?) of Jarvis Gould (aka Gervace Gold) Marriage to Elizabeth Allard 21 Jan 1629 in Biddenden, Kent, England.[9][10]

Male child of Geruare Golde burial 15 Feb 1630 in Biddenden, Kent, England.[11]

Possible christening record for Elizabeth Allard (dau. of Robert Allard) 8 Jul 1610 in Mersham, Kent, England.[12]

There is also a burial record for a female Allard 7 Oct 1631 in Biddenden, Kent, England.[13]

I have found what I feel are quite reliable sources for Jarvis Gould's birth and (first?) marriage. I have put them in Research Notes in his profile.

Interesting finds, Faylene. Hidden Dennis 21 miles from Lydd, home of Jarvis' "master". I think it's worth adding to the narrative as a possibility.

I believe I have found the name of a Jarvis's first wife in England. A parish registry of marriage for Gervace Gold and Elizabeth Allard. Married in Biddenden, Kent, England 21 Jan 1629. Citing this Record

I think I have found some good clues for Jarvis in England. I did a search on FamilySearch and found two records without much detail, but seem to fit. There is a christening for a male Gold child in Kent 22 Sep 1605. Father was William Gold. No mother mentioned. Then there are 2 death records. One is a male child of Gervase Golde. Buried 15 Feb 1630 in Biddenden, Kent, England. The other is for the spouse of Jarvis Golde. Buried 23 Jan 1633 in Biddenden, Kent, England. Here is the link for the page from my search. https://www.familysearch.org/search/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AJarvis~%20%2Bsurname%3AGould~%20%2Bbirth_place%3A%22Kent%2C%20England%22~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1600-1610~%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3AMary~

Gold-195 and Gould-2822 appear to represent the same person because: PGM Guidelines suggest that if we have no evidence to support one spelling over another Gold/Gould, that we use the surname spelling used by Anderson in the Great Migrations Series. This is Gould in this case. Other wise same person.

Do you know anything about Jarvis the father? Have a source? I can't find anything about him, and think he may be a figment of someone's imagination. I will eliminate him, unless I hear any objections.

Am I to infer that Jarvice is the same Jarvice who sailed on the ship Elizabeth under master Wm Stagg from London in April, 1635 and in service to the Clement Bates family? Does that imply he married after arrival?
