Background

Rev Charles Steinkopff Medley was the 3rd son of [[Bacon-3427 | Christiana Bacon and Rt-Rev John Medley, DD, Bishop of Fredericton and Metropolitan of Canada. He was born on 16 September 1835 "in his father's first charge, St John's Parish, Truro," Cornwall. He was baptised by Rev George Cornish on 24 October 1835 at Kenwyn, Truro. He was named after his Sponsor, Dr Charles Frederick Adolphus Steinkopff, Foreign Secretary to the British and Foreign Bible Society, who had married a relative of his uncle, Edward Thornton Jr. Other Sponsors were (his aunt) Mary Ann Bacon Thornton. Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada

In 1845 his father was appointed first Bishop of Fredericton, New Brunswick. "Remaining in England in 1845, immediately after being consecrated, the Bishop came to New Brunswick" and on 10 June 1845 the family arrived at Fredericton.

Education

1851 British Census, Marlborough College, Charles Medley, 15, Pupil.[1]

"He received his early education at Marlborough College in Wiltshire. He removed to this Country [Canada] in 1855 and finished his secular studies at the University of New Brunswick, then King's College and graduated there as BA in 1858. Having studied theology privately with his father, he was ordained [by his father] Deacon in 1859 and Priest in June 1860."

Career

"His first charge was the mission of Douglas (York Co). Here he remained for fifteen months and then returned for a time to Fredericton as assistant to the Bishop in the Cathedral."

On Tuesday 16 June 1863 at St Anne's Church, Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada, "by license, with consent of friends", he was a Witness (with other family members) at the marriage of his father, Rt Rev John Medley, DD, Bishop of Fredericton, to Margaret Hudson. The ceremony was performed by his great-uncle, Rev Samuel Bacon, Rector of Chatham. For further information, see: his father.[2]

Marriage and family

On 21 April 1864 by License, at St Mary the Virgin Church, New Maryland, New Brunswick, by Rev Charles Lee, Rector of Fredericton, he married Charlotte Bird, 4th daughter of Charlotte Pugh and Robert Bird, of Birdtown, York County, Canada. In the 1861 Canada, New Brunswick Census, she was a Domestic Servant in the Household of his father at Fredericton. Witnesses were Edward Shuttleworth Medley and Benjamin Shaw. They had no issue.[3]

St Mary the Virgin Church, New Maryland, was designed by Rev Edward S Medley and had been Consecrated by Rt-Rev John Medley, Bishop of Fredericton, in 1864.[4]

"Soon after his marriage (in 1864) he removed to St John's, Newfoundland, and for three years was Incumbent of St Mary's Church in that City." Kings County Record (2 Dec 1892).

Death and burial

He died on 25 August 1889 at Sussex Rectory, New Brunswick, aged 53. He was buried in Trinity Cemetery, Sussex Corner, Kings County, New Brunswick. His widow died in 1898 and was buried with him.

Probate: 16 Dec 1893, London. Beneficiaries: Charlotte Medley, Walter Harry Wilson Cruttwell.[7]
