Biography

Perry Streeter in his “Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg: DNA Testing yields more Garrison descendants in New Jersey and New York,” New Netherland Connections, 2010, p.2, gives the following. [1]

“The parentage of Elisabeth Gysberts remains unknown. However, by a process of eliminating other potential candidates, Phyllis Miller and I independently arrived at the same point of speculation—was Elisabeth the otherwise unknown fourth “Child, living in 1659 but not identified” of Gÿsbert1 Teunissen and his first wife Aeltje Wouters? Obviously, Elisabeth’s patronymic was Gysberts and she named her eldest known daughter Aeltie. If this identification is correct, Elisabeth was probably born before 1649 when Gÿsbert1 and Aeltje arrived in the colony; otherwise, we would expect to find her baptism in the New Amsterdam church.”

Elisabeth Garritse "vande haes," widow of John Garritse, bought 178 acres at the "head of Fresh Kill" from Vincent Fountaine in March 1697. She sold one half of this to Pierre Joubert on 22 May 1699. About this time she married Adam Cavlie(?) who on 22 May 1700 recorded his obligation "to deliver unto the children of John Gerritse, deceased, the said land whereon I now live after the decease of my wife Elisabeth Gerritse the late widow of John Gerritse, deceased." [2]

Elisabeth must have died about 1703 for in January 1704 Johannes Garrison sold the land on which she had lived. No one of this family appears on the Staten Island Census of 1706 - 1708.[3]
