Biography

Joannes (Jan) Gillis Verbrugge (probably the one at David Provoost's baptism record in comments) and went to New Amsterdam but he eventually returned and married Janneke (Jannetie) Wyckenburgh.

This son of Gillis and Jannetjen, Jan Gillis Verbrugge appears to have gone to New Amsterdam when quite young and was perhaps older than his brother Seth. This "Jan" (actually named Joannes) ^[1], is seen in New Amsterdam as Johannes Verbrugge with Seth Verbrugge and Anneken Lookermans as the sponsers at the baptism of of Petronel, daughter of Jacob Wolferszen. And...on 1 Dec 1652 he is seen as Jan Gilliszen van Brug as a sponser of Mathys, son of Claes Thyszen. Jan and Seth had a sister named Anna who married Jan Bert, a tobacco merchant of Amsterdam.

Emigration

Jan Gillis verbrugge was at New Amsterdam sometime before December 1, 1652. He may have returned to Holland some time after Aug 3, 1653. No further record of him was found in the NARDC records. It is also possible that Jan Gilliszen removed from New Amsterdam.

Jan Gillis' cousin Johannes Pietersen Verbrugge [Calendar Hist. Mss. (N. Y.) Dutch]. were evidently well established in New Amsterdam by 1653, when on March 13, 1653, Johannes subscribed 200 florins toward the defense of New Amsterdam (Records of New Amsterdam, Vol. I, p. 66). Jan Gillis Verbrugge, gave 100 florins. The majority of subscribers gave much less.

1652 Dwc 1: Jan Gilliszen Van Brug on Dec 1, 1652 witnessed a baptism at the Reformed Dutch Church of Manhattan, New Amsterdam^[3]

1653 Aug 03; Johannes Gilliszen Van Brug and his cousin Johannes Pieterszen Van Brug witnessed the baptism of a child of their business partner^[4].

Death

No record of Jan Gilliszen Van Brug|Van Brugge|Van Brugh was found after August, 1653. Further he was not mentioned in his Aunt Barbara Van Brugh's will dated 1664.
