Daniel Hyden, Pvt., American Revolutionary War Soldier, Chosen By Commander-in-Chief George Washington and Colonel Daniel Morgan

Daniel Hyden, born in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., VA., on 17 MAR 1753, s/o William Hyden and Lucy Hyden.[1]

The Revolutionary War, also known as the American Revolution or United States War of Independence, (1775-83), developed from growing tensions between residents of Great Britain's 13 North America colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown. Skirmishes between British troops and colonial militiamen in Lexington and Concord in April 1775 started the conflict, and by the following summer, the rebels were preparing for war to gain their independence.[2][3]

Daniel enlisted November of 1776 into the 9th Virginia Regiment. The Regiment was authorized on January 11, 1776, in the Virginia State Troops on 11 January 1776; it was subsequently organized between 5 February and 16 March 1776 and comprised seven companies of troops from easternmost Virginia.[4]

PVT. Daniel Hyden was without douth an excellent "sharpshooter." In July of 1777, he was chosen to be a soldier in "Morgan's Riflemen"; this unit compiled a spectacular record scarcely excelled by any regiment in the Continental Army. George Washington[5] set up Daniel Morgan with five hundred riflemen. "They were all chosen men," selected from the army at large, and well acquainted with the use of rifles and with that mode of fighting.[6]

Morgan's Riflemen or Morgan's Rifles was an elite light infantry unit commanded by Daniel Morgan. The riflemen played a vital role in executing tasks because the infantry was equipped with what was then the cutting-edge rifle instead of muskets.[7][8]

Morgan's Riflemen were a key model for the fictional unit portrayed in the movie (Mel Gibson) The Patriot."[9][10]

After being discharged from "Morgan's Rifles" Daniel enlisted into Capt. Curtis Kendall's 1st Virginia Regiment, commanded by Col. William Davies.[11] In May of 1780, he served at the Battle of Waxhaw also known as "Buford's Massacre" in South Carolina.[12] [13]

Pension Record Information

Andrew Moore,[14] in a petition to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1817, stated: "Daniel Hyden had 14 wounds on him, one of a ball through his foot, another through the flesh of his leg, a number of cuts of a sword on his arms and head, and a wound in his breast which he said was by the tread of a light horse (assumed to be wounds from Waxhaws).

General Moore, along with others, petitioned Congress to grant Daniel a disability pension. The petition was accompanied by "Certificates of Disability." signed by two doctors. General Breckenridge said the first petition were burned when the enemy attacked Washington. General Moore went on in his second petition to say, "When I saw him (Daniel) in Richmond, I pressed him to apply for a pension. He refused and said he never would as long as he could live by labor. I think no better soldier ever entered the army."

During the petition, Gen. Moore testified that he enlisted Daniel for two years from either winter 1776 or spring 1777, where Daniel served in the 9th Virginia Regiment and was a part of Col. Morgan's Rifle Regiment. The Major general further testified that in the winter of 1778, Daniel re-enlisted for another 3 years and was in Buford's defeat with Col. Henry Bower. The MG also testified that Daniel was held in high esteem by his officers and that he had encouraged Daniel to apply but Daniel had refused to apply as long as he could live by his labor and many years had passed since that discussion.
