I fell in love with genealogical research back in the early 1990s, when I created a tree for my grandmother (when most of the research was still using actual books and microfiche and writing lots and lots of letters). I returned to it just before my daughter was born and it has become a way to balance out being a stay-at-home parent. Before I became a parent, I was a graphic designer, illustrator, and interactive art director for about a billion years.

Biography

Molly Demeter Sokolow was born on May 8, 1969 at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, California to Jane Ellen Quarnstrom Sokolow and Stephen “Steve” Alec Sokolow. Molly spent her first few years living in a commune in Berkeley, California called Big Rock Candy Mountain. Her younger brother Montano “Tano” Sokolow was born at the commune on September 25, 1971. The commune broke up when Molly was 2 1/2 and the family spent the next few years traveling the country and living for short periods with friends.

In 1973 the family bought a house in Berkeley, California. Molly and Tano attended elementary school at Thousand Oaks Elementary. In 1976, Jane and Steve separated. Jane moved to Hawaii and for 6 weeks in 1977 Molly and Tano stayed there with her. At the end of the trip, Steve flew out and took the children home to Berkeley with him. Jane and Steve became officially divorced around this time.

Between 1978 and 1981 Molly and Tano split their time between their parents’ households. This often meant movie between different cities and different schools. Molly attended Thousand Oaks for half of her third grade year and then spent the second half at the Nevada City Elementary School on Hoover Lane in Nevada City, California. She spent fourth grade at Franklin Elementary in Berkeley, fifth grade at Seven Hills Middle School in Nevada City, and sixth grade at Peninsula School in Palo Alto, California. At this time both parents moved to Menlo Park, a city adjacent to Palo Alto, so that Molly and Tano could stay at the same school for the rest of their middle school education.

After graduating 8th grade from Peninsula School, Molly attended Menlo-Atherton High School. Finding the lack of art education at that school frustrating, she took classes outside the high school in order to develop a portfolio for art college. She graduated Menlo-Atherton in May, 1987 and began attending the California Institute for the Arts (in Valencia, California) in September, 1987. She majored in Visual Communication and graduated with a BFA in 1991.

Molly moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area after college and became a graphic artist. In May, 1996 she married Peter Michael Martin, an architect. They moved to Portland, Oregon in the summer of 1996. The marriage was short lived, and they separated in May, 1998. Their divorce was final a year later. Molly met David Hayden while working at a web development startup in Portland. They became engaged on December 31st, 1999 and got married on September 22, 2001 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Molly and Dave were chosen by Shelby Shea to become the adoptive parents of her daughter, Corazon Jane Louise Hayden, through an open adoption on November 25, 2013. Corazon was born on November 24, 2013 at PeaceHealth Hospital in Vancouver, Washington.

Molly, Dave and Cora moved from Portland to Austin, Texas in August of 2019, in order to be closer to family.

Hi Molly, Thank you for joining WikiTree and the message and comments!

Thanks for adding profiles to WikiTree. There are reasons behind the eighth point in our Honor Code: "We cite sources. Without sources we can't objectively resolve conflicting information." A source provides a way to find out more about the person. Showing sources reduces confusion and duplicates.

Please make sure to look for duplicates on WikiTree before adding a profile. Having dates and locations attached to every person assists in our mission as well.

This page describes Sources.

The Sources Style Guide shows how to enter sources in the biography.

And I'm here to help too, just ask!
