Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Whitney Young Sr. is a part of US Black heritage.

Whitney Moore Young was born September 26, 1897[1] to Taylor Young and Annie Henderson at Paynes Depot in Scott County, Kentucky.

In 1900, Whitney and his sisters, June and Sallie, were living with their parents, Taylor and Annie Young in Midway in Woodford County, Kentucky where his father was a farm laborer.[2] By 1910 the family was living in a home owned by Taylor in Scott County. In addition to his parents, Whitney's sister Sallie was still at home. Also in residence was his sister, Fannie and her husband, John Henry Black. The adult males were working as farm laborers.[3]

He was one of the first students to enroll at the Lincoln Institute[4], an all-Black school located near Simpsonville, Kentucky. He eventually became part of the staff from 1918 to 1935, then President from 1936 to 1964.[5][6] The 1940 yearbook of the Institute was dedicated to him.[7]

In 1918, he married Laura Ray of Lebanon, Kentucky. She was the first Black postmistress of Kentucky, second in the United States. [5] They had 3 children:

  1. Dr. Arnita Boswell - "Professor at the University of Chicago"[5]
  2. Dr. Eleanor Love - "Professor at the University of Louisville, one of its first black Deans"[5]
  3. Whitney M. Young Jr., "nationally known civil rights leader." [5]
Private Whitney Young Sr. served in the United States Army in World War I
    Service started: 1918
    Unit(s): 317th Engineer Regiment
    Service ended: 1919

Whitney Sr would serve as a Private in the US Army, 1CL CO 317 ENGRS, from March, 1918 until his return from France in 1919.[8][9][10]

In 1920, Whitney and Lara were living in a rented home on 30th Street in Detroit, Michigan where Whitney was employed as an engineer with the DUR Railway.[11]

They would return to Kentucky shortly afterward, as all three children were born there. By 1930 Whitney and Lara and their 3 children were living at Lincoln Institue where Whitney was teaching.[12] The children would remain at home through 1940. The 1950 Census shows Whitney as the President of Lincoln Institute and Laura as Post-mistress. Their daughter Arnita (25) is originally listed on the Census but the name is crossed out.[13]

He died at the age of 66 on August 18 1975 in Louisville, Kentucky.[14][5][6][15][16] He is buired at the Cove Haven Cemetery originally called Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington, KY. [17]

Research Notes

Although some biographies indicate Whitney began teaching at Lincoln Institute in 1918, this is not supported by the 1920 Census which shows him working as an engineer in Detroit, nor by the Lincoln Institute Yearbook of 1940 which states in its dedication to him that he had served as a teacher and director for the past 18 years. As Whitney Jr was born in Kentucky it is likely that he began teaching at Lincoln in 1921/1922.

Young-33914 and Young-34824 appear to represent the same person because: Believe they are the same person as I believe the private daughter is one of the daughters of the Young I created. I contacted Cristin Carole profile manager of Young-83 who claimed that Young-83 was the second wife of William Yancy Bell II.
