Alexander was born on the 28th February 1759 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, the son of John Tilloch and Elizabeth Stevenson.[1]
Alexander married Margaret Simson on the 29th July 1780 at Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.[2]
In 1787 he moved to London and purchased the 'Star' newspaper, and developed a process to prevent forgery of Bank of England Notes.
In later life he became a Sandemanian and occasionally preached at Goswell Road.
He died in 1825 in Islington, Middlesex, England.
The newspaper notice of his death read:
Dr Alexander Tilloch.—We announce with regret the death of this Gentleman, who had long been the Proprietor and Conductor of The Star evening Paper. The melancholy event occurred on Wednesday last at his house in Pentonville. Though labour and attention requisite the conduct of an Evening Paper are fully sufficient to occupy the Editor, yet Dr. Tilloch found leisure for philosophical pursuits, and published many useful and instructive tracts, highly creditable to his talents and attainments [3]
