Biography

Birth & Parents

Joseph Haviland, son of Roger Haviland & Hannah Wing, was born 2 Sep 1793 ^[1] in Glens Falls near Feeder Dam. (Per Frost, another record says he was born "31 of 7 mo., 1792.")

Marriage

Joseph married (1st) on 6 May 1813 to Lydia Sisson, daughter of Nathaniel Sisson & Grace Gifford of Queensbury, NY. ^[1] (Josephine Frost's Haviland Genealogy quotes as a source the Queensbury Friends' Records.)

Joseph married 2nd on 2 Nov 1871 to Mrs. Hannah (Anthony) Haviland, his brother David's widow. ^[1]

Life

Joseph was one of the largest land owners in Warren County (approximately 700 acres - and one of the most desirable farms around Glens Falls).

"In the spring of 1826 he purchased his farm on Sanford Ridge, where he lived until his death, November 26th, 1875. He was one of the most extensive and successful farmers of the town, acquired ample means and invested largely in farming lands near his home. ... His long life was one which reflected only the most honorable traits of character and deeds worthy of an honest man." ^[2]

"Joseph Haviland was the son of Joseph and Lydia Sisson Haviland, the former having been born at Feeder Dam, September 12, 1793, and married May 3, 1814. His wife was a daughter of Nathaniel Sisson, who resided at New Bedford, and was of English extraction. Joseph Haviland (father) purchased a farm in 1826 on Sanford Ridge, where he lived until his death, November 26, 1875. He was one of the most intelligent and successful farmers of his day. He was the father of three children: Daniel S., Joseph and Lydia Ann. He led a long life of usefulness, filled with kind deeds and many liberal acts." ^[3]

(* Note: We are not sure who Emma Haviland is, who appears in the 1870 census. Lydia died in 1870, apparently just before this census was taken, and he would marry Hannah Anthony in 1871. It can't be Emma L., daughter of Joseph Jr., as she was born in 1858 and was only 12 years old in 1870 (and appears in the next census). She might be Mary E. Haviland, Joseph's first cousin twice removed via the Haviland side (and cousins a couple more times via different branches), who lived in Glens Falls as he did... Assuming "E" is for "Emma." She was born 13 Apr 1853, daughter of Ransford Baldwin Haviland & F. Marion Baldwin; Ransford the son of David Haviland & Flora Baldwin; David the son of Nathaniel Haviland & Jemima Hoag; Nathaniel being Joseph's uncle.)
