Elizabeth Shull was born May 1, 1913, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was the oldest child of A. Franklin Shull and Margaret Jeffrey Buckley.[1]
After attending Ann Arbor public schools and the University High School, she enrolled in the University of Michigan, where in 1933 she graduated first in her class. She went on to Columbia University, where she received a master's degree in 1934, and the University of Chicago where she studied under Sewall Wright and received a Ph.D in genetics in 1937.[1]
In 1937 she married William L. Russell, a fellow doctoral student of Sewall Wright. The couple moved to Mount Desert Island, Maine, that same year to work at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor. They had four children together before the marriage ended in divorce in 1947.[1]
