Peter Burge was an Australian rugby footballer and coach. The eldest of the four Burge brothers, he represented his country in both rugby league and rugby union; one of the first Australian dual-code rugby internationals.
Peter Harold Boyne Burge was born on 14th February 1884 at Penrith, New South Wales, Australia. He was the eldest son of Peter Burge and Emily Pickering. [1]
Playing rugby union with South Sydney in 1904, the twenty-year-old Burge was selected for the Metropolis (City) representative side against the Great Britain tourists. When the All Blacks toured in 1905 he played against them firstly for Metropolis and then in a New South Wales side. A lock-forward, he claimed three international rugby caps for Australia; in two of which matches he served as captain. Breaking his tibia in a match against Devon in 1908, he took no further part in the tour and was replaced by his brother, Albert.[2]
He was one of fourteen 1908-09 Wallabies who defected to rugby league after their return from the Olympics and the epic tour. He joined the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 1910, but then the following year linked with Alby and Frank at Glebe. He toured Great Britain on the 1911–12 Kangaroo tour, captained by his former Wallaby and then Glebe captain, Chris McKivat; thus making him one of Australia's first dual-internationals. He retired from competition at the end of the 1914 season (his youngest brother, Laidley, made first grade at Glebe in 1916).[2]
In 1937, Peter coached the St George Dragons; as Frank had done in 1927-1930.[2]
Peter died suddenly, aged 72 years, at his brother Frank's house at Hurstville, New South Wales on 15th July 1956. He is buried at Waverley Cemetery with their parents, Peter and Emily Burge. [3]
