Biography

Anabel (Unknown) Graham is a member of Clan Graham.

Faunes wasn't her maiden name. She married David de Graham as the widow of Nicholas de Faunes. Her parents are unknown.

Research note by John M Sutherland-Fisher Scottish Clans Protocol Team Leader

There seems to be a conflict among a number of authors as to the identity of leading members of the Graham family from the reign of Alexander II through to that of Robert the Bruce. Some of the marriages etc detailed in the People of Mediaeval Scotland simply defy logic so I have taken the family and listed it generation by generation as detailed by Sir Robert Douglas in his Peerage of Scotland published in 1764.

What is the basis for the birth and death dates on this profile? She was still alive according to a document dated to 1232 https://www.poms.ac.uk/record/source/4642/ and another with a probable date of 1230s or 1240s https://www.poms.ac.uk/record/source/2488/

Re: the POMS document 4642. JBP et al Scots Peerage, Vol 6, P 200: "There is a charter in his favour by Richard de Faunes, his brother uterine, the date of which cannot well be put much later than 1200, of two tofts in Melokistan (Mellerstain). The granter further ' voluntate ejusdem [by the will of the same] David ' concedes to the Dame Amabel ' matri nostrae ' the said lands for her life, and these were, subject to the mother's liferent, to revert to the granter in the event of his brother dying without issue or changing his life. From the circumstance that David, at a later period, granted these lands to the Abbey of Kelso, it is not unreasonable to conjecture that his education was intrusted to the Abbot and Convent, and that his taking orders seemed to his brother a contingency worth providing against." JBP et al date the POMS 4642 document to no later than 1200, probably because it infers that David's father is deceased, his mother is still living, and his path in life is not yet decided, so he is probably a minor. My interpretation of the date on the POMS record of X 31 Dec 1232 is that it is a date range, with 1232 the ceiling (that coincides with the death of Earl Patrick I). The date given for the POMS 2488 document is a range of 1182 X 13 December 1248, with the date notes "Death of Earl Waltheof × death of Earl Patrick (II); probable date based on attestation of David of Graham." That is a pretty long range, 1182 and 1248 being the floor and ceiling because it names Patrick, earl of Dunbar. If Amabel's dod in her profile is based on the date of 1200 assigned to the 1st charter by JBP et al, it should probably be amended to after 1200. I did watch the information video about the POMS database and read their tutorial, but their dates are not mentioned other than floruit dates for people, and that only in passing.
