Hi Jim,

Thanks for contributing your research to WikiTree!

I noticed that you've been creating some pre-1700-era profiles (such as Unknown-647864). This is a reminder that certifying to work on these types of profiles means that you agree to add reliable sources as outlined in the Pre-1700 Certification Quiz. Geneanet is not considered a reliable source. Please make sure that you have at least one reliable source that you are able to add to any pre-1700 profile at the time you create it. You can review this document for help in citing reliable sources for pre-1700 profiles: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources

If you need help with this, our G2G Forum is a great place to start. You can get there by clicking the link on the Help menu.

Thanks for your help with this,

Francesca

Hi Jim,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources).

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Welcome Jim!

Thanks for volunteering! I am pleased to confirm and welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration. Don't be afraid to ask questions in our G2G forum and get involved as much or as little as works for you. Be sure to check out the tabs at the very top right hand side of your profile, there is lots to discover!

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do!

Happy tree climbing

Hi Rhonda, I created a Anna Margaretha Watry (Watry-176) then I found a comment by a Jaqueline A. Girouard to a Joe Lahnerz in Watry-116 that "Watry-116 and Vatrin-15 appear to represent the same person because: same information with different last name spelling. Please merge into one profile." and it appears that Vatrin-15 was merged into Watry-116. This seams to be against the merge rules i.e. "If there are multiple duplicates, be careful about the direction of the merges. Merge all duplicates into the same, lowest-numbered WikiTree ID with the correct Last Name at Birth" though Watry and Vatrin are not Identical I have this variation in my Ancestry tree where Anna Margaretha's father Francois has an alternate spelly of Vatrin. What do I do now, merge Watry-176 into Watry-116? I don't understand why Watry-116 was not suggested as a match when I created Watry-176. Perhaps it is because I was just following/creating a maternal branch trying to link to Anna Margaretha Watry and didn't include spouses and other children.

Jim

PS - I also have duplicates Wagener-550 and Thomas-44711 for Wagener-65 and Thoma-21.

Hi Jim!

Since I wasn't part of the merge, I can only assume that someone decided that Watry was the correct last name at birth hence the merge into Watry instead of Vatrin. The key is to merge into the "the correct Last Name at Birth". If you have other duplicates then those should also be merged. Unfortunately we don't always get suggested matches even though they are on here. It has happened to me a few times as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks Rhonda,

Should I contact this Joe Lahnerz then? What concerns me is that many of his profiles were created by a GEDCOM import 5 years ago and might not have been vetted properly.

It would certainly be worth a shot to contact him. WikiTree is all about collaboration and it sounds like you are pretty knowledgeable about the family.
