I've been building my tree on My Heritage for over two years and have recently surpassed 8,000 people. Due to my late interest in Genealogy, there are few resources within the family for information, so I am relying on my recollections mixed with obituaries, newspaper sites, some awesome Genealogy forums, record requests and sometimes pure luck. If anyone has additional knowledge to add to my family history, it will be gratefully accepted.
Side projects and distractions:
> Building a tree for the Langevin/Lange family (Chicago area)
> Researching our 1890s house with no (???) history
> Novice gardener/landscaper
> Treasure hunter
> Cat wrangler
(If messaging me, it may take a day or two for a reply. I am a government serf with an odd and annoying schedule.)

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Your records say you are related to a Viola Sahm. I matched our DNA and we do have some hits, so I am guessing that Viola is somewhere in my tree. Do you know much about Viola's family?
Viola Sahm was my Great Aunt. She and her three siblings (Darlys, Delmar and Donald) were born in South Dakota, but then they moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Viola eventually married Arthur Putman -- they lived in Wisconsin and had four daughters: Charolette, Linda, Mary and Sandra
I clicked on your link for Russell Sahm (I assume your grandfather?). He is from Pennsylvania area? There are a lot of Sahms in that area, but I have never found a connection to that area of the country in our family. We might have some DNA links, but it might not be through that route. My great-grandfather, William John Sahm, immigrated from Germany through Canada to South Dakota. His wife, Mary Schneider (aka Dillenschneider), was from Chippewa County, Wisconsin.
There are "complications" in our Sahm line.... maybe that's where the connection is? Specifically regarding my Great-Grandpa William Sahm. Prepare yourself... it gets complicated....
He had two other children in South Dakota before marrying my Great-Grandma. They each had different mothers (the mothers were sisters.... family name was Post). Child #1 was Lena Marie Sahm. She married someone named "Downs", then someone named "Schubloom". She had moved from South Dakota to Washington and passed away there in 2004. Child #2 was Mary P. Clark. She was also in South Dakota.... I do not yet have any details on her life, marriage, etc. Both the mothers of the children also have "Clark" briefly as last names. The theory is two guys (brothers?) may have offered to marry them as a reputation saver? I don't see either of them staying with anyone named Clark though.
These children were not known (or talked about) until I started our family tree. I don't believe the Post family wanted much to do with William Sahm (for multiple reasons) and they listed the children briefly as their step-daughters on the Census.
I am curious as to our family link. Maybe some of the above names might fit in somewhere? Or perhaps it might be a Sahm connection.
I know that many PA Germans moved to Wisconsin along with the other German migration. We could be connected through those lines as well. I have deep paternal roots in PA for a German-surnamed American. Usually brothers and sisters spread out for better land and cheaper taxes. It is probably so for our connected ancestors. Right now the "Tree" doesn't know what to do with you and me. It cannot find a paper trail between us....yet. Maybe your grandparents are also of German or even Scottish descent.
I think we need to cast the net wider.
William's siblings were Meta (Metie Marie) A. Sahm (Houy), Carl W. Sahm Jr., Paul G. Sahm, Anna Marie Wilhemina (Zerbel, Heath), Louise G. Sahm, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sahm (Hanlon) and Edith (Ida) Bertha Sahm (Gunderson). I have information on all the siblings except for Louise... for which I only have a birth year 1899 and born in Germany. All the other children listed here came over from the Mecklenburg-West Pommerania area in Germany. They all traveled through Canada and crossed over into North Dakota.... most settling in South Dakota. Some eventually continued over into Wisconsin and Minnesota. Paul G. Sahm had TB during the voyage over and eventually passed away in North Dakota.
I have seen listings of Sahms in Pennsylvania area, but never found any direct links to them.
Looking on GEDmatch, I believe it reads that we have 7.1 cM.... which is 3rd cousin (?). So the connection is probably among the relatives back in Germany. I haven't expanded my tree back to Germany at this point.... only that Carl Sahm's father (also Carl) married someone with the last name Hasselmann.
If you find how we are connected, I would love to hear it. :)
What details do you have about him? I'm still expanding my tree (huge family).
I've noticed a lot of Witt listings on here are from Southern and Eastern state areas. I haven't found any connections to those at all (yet).
(They used "Witte" for a while after immigrating, then some of the children dropped the "E". Also, misspellings on Censuses, etc. have come up as "Whitte". And it's possible the initial language and writing barriers might have caused some to write their name as expected by others.)
Henry Witte's family seemed to stay in Illinois. Cook County (Chicago area), Rock Island and Stephenson County mainly. Stephenson and Rock Island Counties are both in Northwestern Illinois. But Cook County (Chicago area) is only about an hour from Gary, Indiana. So it is possible that Albert Leroy could be related. I haven't found that name yet, but I'm still working on the histories of both Fred (Witte-957) and Henry's (Witte-967) children. Even though I don't have a lot yet, I just added them on here if you want to see if anything matches your family.
WikiTree IDs: Fred is "Witte-957" and Henry is "Witte-967"
Let me know if you find anything or need any information. As you can see, I'm a bit slow at responses, but I will eventually :)
Oh... what is your Great Aunt's maiden name? I can search my main tree and see if it comes up.

Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This is a courtesy email to share the After Adopting Orphans FAQ which explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.
If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.
I hope this helps,
Debi
PS Elbow bump from a government retiree who knows well about those odd and annoying schedules. How dare they cut in on our fun time *grin*
