Hello Dan,

I have seen you name on “DNA Connections” for several ancestors I’m researching. So, I checked GEDmatch and yes indeed we match DNA. We match on 52 segments, however, none are very long. The longest is 8.9 cMs.

I worked with a Dan Gilbert who was in Business Development at BAE Systems in Austin, TX. Odds are that isn’t you but I wanted to check.

Are you on Ancestry.com? I want to use their DNA matching capabilities to determine how we are related.

Have you checked Ports of entry for places like SC and New Orleans? A lot of people came in that way and caught ship for the area they wanted to go to. I know there is one Gilbert Family I believe Chris Gilbert is adding up around MN. So, some traveled over land while others came in through Canada.

Hi Gigi,

Yes Chris has helped me early on, not long after I joined Wikitree. I might have to look at NO or other ports of entry. The one thing I am sure of is that my G-Grandfather came from PA and that his parents lived there. How they got there is the challenge LOL. Thank you for the help I will look in the less traveled ports to see if I can find anything.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for having a Big Heart and adopting Orphan Profiles. You will want to read this After adopting orphans FAQ to understand what to do next and it explains the special attention those profiles need.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

"Nederland, Indexen van de Archieven, Primaire Archiefstukken (BS en DTB), 1600-2000", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6ZGR-F4XM : 4 June 2021), Johannes Gielbert, 1836.

There are a couple more sources at that same place. One is Jan Joseph Gilbert. He registered property there. And a couple of births beside the one above.

Just in case you aren’t registered it cost nothing. They are more or less building your tree also.

I looked at that record, the problem I'm running into is that I can't verify that Johannes is John and I haven't been able to find any record of a Johannes Gielbert immigrating to the US. Thanks for the help!

Hello Dan,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi Maureen, A quick question. Is there a way to import GEDCOM directly into your Family Tree? I am hoping to avoid having to type all that information in if possible.

Thanks

posted by Dan Gilbert
Hi Dan

There's a utility called GEDCOMPARE which allows you to do this. You would create a GEDCOM file (of less than 5000 profiles) on your other system - then load it here. It doesn't get loaded into our database directly as you have to work through a matching process which aims to prevent duplicate profiles in the WikiTree database.

Here's the help page on GEDCOMPARE. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:GEDCOMpare

Best wishes Maureen

When I started, I found it better to reenter than mess around with the GEdCom import and at the same time I could then check all the dates/facts etc. Still think it is better to do so and the profile should then be a better cleaner one.

Thanks, I will have to do some clean up anyway as there were some questionable dates in the old tree.
