When his father, Madog ap maredudd, died in 1160, territories north of the Rhaeadr were divided among Gruffudd and his brother Owain. He had Maelor and Ial (Yale) and added Nanheudwy. When his brother Owain Fychan died in 1187 hge gained Cynllaith and lower Mochnant, so that he reunited northern Powys except for Penillyn and Ediernon. [3]
Marriage
Gruffudd married Angharad ferch Owain Gwynedd as her second husband. [1]
When Gruffydd Maelor, the last Prince of Powys, died in 1191 the kingdom was divided into Powys Fadog in the north and Powys Wenwynwyn in the south. [4]
