Alice Mann was born in 1710 in Ulster, Ireland, most-likely in County Tyrone. She was of Scots-Irish heritage and a Protestant. Alice married William Hamilton, b: 1685 in Lanark, Scotland, in 1735 in County Tyrone, Ireland. She was his 2nd wife; his oldest son, Robert Hamilton, had been born earlier in 1720 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[1]
After their first children were born in Co. Down, Ulster, Ireland, William and Alice (Mann) Hamilton emigrated to America, arriving in New Castle, Delaware, in 1741. They had a daughter, Alice Mann, born there in 1742 and then moved into Pennsylvania. Around 1750, with many other Scots-Irish pioneers, they moved south along the Great Wagon Road to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. They were among the early settlers of Kerrs Creek, then in Augusta County; later to be included in Rockbridge County, Virginia.[2]
Two of William's oldest son Robert Hamilton's children were killed in the 1759 Shawnee Indian "Kerrs Creek massacre" and 3 were taken captive (later ransomed). William Hamilton died there in 1762, possibly in one of the follow-on raids that continued for several years. Robert Hamilton and his wife, Margaret (McKee) Hamilton, survived, living in Kerrs Creek until he died in 1786. [3]
Alice (Mann) Hamilton also somehow survived these tragedies. She died in 1800, 90 years old, at the home of her daughter, Mary Ann (Hamilton) Byrd, in Bath County, Virginia, USA.[4][5][6]
