Biography

John was born on February 19, 1961, in Wellesley, Massachusetts, the son of James Joseph McDermott, Jr. and Edra Margaret Allanson. John attended the Marshall L. Perrin Elementary School in Wellesley, MA, Wellesley Junior High School and Wellesley Senior High School. He graduated high school in 1979, and matriculated at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA in September of 1979. John graduated from UMass/Amherst in December of 1983 with a degree in Communications. In the spring of 1984, he began a career in advertising by taking a job at Maier Advertising in Farmington, CT. After working there for a year, he moved back to the Boston area and took a copywriting position at Chalfin & Kostopoulos Advertising. John stayed in Boston until the summer of 1987, when he took a position with Lesley Advertising in Greenville, SC. John lived in Greenville for 3 years before moving to St. Louis and taking a position with DMB&B, a global advertising agency. After five years at DMB&B, john took a position in Nashville, TN with The Buntin Group. It is at this time that John married Carla (Crupper) Feeney. Along with Carla's sons Erik Lytle Feeney and Kyle Wilkes Feeney, the couple lived in Nashville until the late spring of 1997, when they moved to St. Louis. John returned to (now) D'Arcy, and on August 14, 1997, he and Carla welcomed a third son to the family - Sean Jameson McDermott. The family remained in St. Louis until 2002, at which point they moved back to Greenville, SC and John returned to Lesley Advertising. The agency was renamed the bounce agency in 2007, and after several more years, closed. In late 2012, John formed a small advertising/marketing company called Brandfarmers, LLC.

As of this date - January 4, 2016 - John continues to operate Brandfarmers. His wife Carla is a second grade teacher at Buena Vista Elementary School in Greer, SC. Oldest son Erik is with TD Bank in Greenville. Middle son Kyle is with Aerotek in Akron, OH. Youngest son Sean is a freshman at Clemson University.
