Henry D. was born on 15 September 1875 in On Mate Creek, Logan, West Virginia. He was the son of Elias Prater Hatfield and Elizabeth Chafin.[2][3]

Henry D. died at the age of 87 on 23 October 1962 and was buried in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia, United States of America.[5]
