Biography

Harvey was born in 1796. He was the son of Luke Ballard and Cynthia Janes.

Harvey was noted as being blind on the 1850 census. He was working as a laborer and living with his recently widowed sister, Cynthia, and her children.[1]

Harvey was living with his brother, Roswell, and Roswell's wife, Sarah, in 1855 in Camden. Both Harvey and Roswell were born in Ostego County. Harvey, aged 60 was designated as "blind".[2]

Roswell had died by 1860, and Harvey was considered a boarder in the home of Sarah A. Ballard, 58, born in Massachusetts, whose occupation was listed as "Lady".[3]

In 1865, Harvey was back with his sister Cynthia's family. He was living in the household of his nephew, Erastus and Erastus’ sister, Mary, and their cousin, Charles in Camden.[4]

From a Camden History:

The first house that was built where John H. Taylor lives was built by Ora Ballard in 1812. Ora Ballard married Sally, daughter of Joseph Northrup. They went as missionaries to the Indians at St. Joseph, Mo., returned in old age, and died at her sister Emily's (Mrs. Riley Preston), in Pennsylvania. Ora Ballard was brother of Deacon Roswell and blind Henry [sic] Ballard, and Mrs. Erastus Upson.[5]

Harvey Ballard died at age 80 in 1876.[6]
