Abraham was a son of Sgt. John Bates and Alice Shaw. He was born on 29 February 1723.[1]

Abraham Bates and Sarah Tower married after 17 December 1749, when they entered their intentions to marry.[1]Married 1 Jan 1749/50 - their children were Abraham II, Susanna, Joshua, Thaddeus, Alpheus, Lebbeus, Elisha, John & Abigail Bates

Abraham served during the Revolutionary War as a Pvt. in Capt. Asa White's Co., Col. Solomon Lovell's Regiment, Mar 1775; Capt. Ward's Co., Col. Coggswell's Regiment, Oct-Dec 1778 at forts at and about Boston; Capt. Lincolns Co., Col. Joseph Webb's Regiment, Aug-Nov 1771

He passed away 7 August 1806 as per his DAR record A007407. [2]

Abraham Bates Sr. did not serve in the Militia, as stated above. That service belongs to his son Abraham Jr. However, Abraham Sr. did serve as a town official during the Revolution, which qualities him as a Patriot.
