Biography

Private Hezekiah Blankenship served in the United States Civil War.
Mustered out: 10 Oct 1863
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): 8th Volunteer Cavalry, Company H

Hezekiah was born about 1784 [1]. He was the son of William Blankenship and Molly Trent.

He was married twice:.

  1. Married Nancy Bowling (abt.1800-abt.1842) in Virginia in 1815 [2].
  2. Married Rachel Sanders (abt.1806-abt.1850) in 1842 [3].

Hezekiah had several children with his first wife Nancy, although the census records prior to 1850 only provided the gender and age ranges of family members rather than names. [4] [5] [6]. The 1820, 1830, and 1840 census records showed that Hezekiah and his family resided in Halifax, Virginia along with several enslaved persons.

The 1850 census shows Heziekiah's widow Rachel still residing in Halifax, Virginia with her children and step-children [7]:

  1. Dewitt Clinton Blankenship (abt.1828-1908) (age 21) [8]:
  2. Henry (age 15)
  3. Louisa Eliza Blankenship (1840-1906) (age 12) [9]
  4. Clarinda (age 10)
  5. John W. Blankenship (abt.1841-1914)
  6. Betsy Blankenship (abt.1844-aft.1850)

Based on their 1842 marriage date, Betsy is likely Rachel's only biological children with Hezekiah.

Hezekiah Blankenship-4444 was a slaveholder throughout his life:

  • The 1810 census lists 9 free white persons and a total of 10 household
  • The 1820 census lists 5 enslaved persons - 4 male and 1 female [4]
  • The 1830 census lists 7 enslaved persons - 5 male and 2 female [5]
  • The 1840 census lists 6 enslaved persons - 5 male and 1 female [6]
  • Hezekiah's records as a slaveholder have been added to The Beyond Kin Project. (Search for Slaveholder using last name only for best results.) [10]

Hezekiah served as a Private in the 8th Volunteer Cavalry, Confederate Army, in the U.S. Civil War [11]. He was killed in action on October 10, 1863, and was buried in the Memphis, Tennessee National Cemetery [12] [13].

Blankenship-1933 and Blankenship-1676 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicates. Birth and death dates on both profiles are estimates, but close enough to be the same person. Blankenship-1676 was created first and should be the surviving profile, however it does not contain a biography or sources. Bio and sources from Blankenship-1933 should be retained after the merge.
Blankenship-4444 and Blankenship-1933 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death locations, same wife Nancy Bowling. Birth and death dates differ somewhat, but I believe these are the same people.

Blankenship-2155 and Blankenship-1676 appear to represent the same person because: This is a duplicate. Hezekiah Blankenship (1794-1860) has incorrect mother (the Find A Grave source listed even has a different husband listed). The correct mother is Martha Patsy (Lester) Blankenship (abt.1787-aft.1870) and she is listed on the ending merged profile of Hezekiah Blankenship (abt.1816-)

Blankenship-2155 and Blankenship-1676 do not represent the same person because: Different parents and dates and locations!
