Biography

Born in 1780 Richard Bligh was the second son of John Bligh of Abingdon St, London and his wife, Lucy Shuter. [1] (NOTE. The Baptism at Bodmin 21 March 1784 is for Richard Bligh son of Richard and Hester Bligh) [2] Richard's baptismal record has not yet been identified. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge and was called to the Bar in 1807. [3]

He married his third cousin, Elizabeth, daughter of Vice Admiral William Bligh of The Bounty and his wife, Elizabeth Betham. Their marriage bond dated 28 November 1826 says that Elizabeth was of the Parish of Farmingham, Kent while Richard was of St Pancras. The bond cost Richard the extraordinary sum of £200. [4] Richard and Elizabeth were married at Old Church, St Pancras on 29 November. [5] They were both great, great grandchildren of Richard Bligh.

Richard died of apoplexy in James St, London on 22 May 1838 and was buried at All Souls, Kensal Green on 28th. [6] HIs death was registered in Westminster, St Margaret. [7]
