Biography

See notes under her husband.

In the Testament of Jan Maartensz Slot (Rood) and Aaf Pieters Bulloper (Fokels) dated April 30 1742, Marij was working as their housemaid. She was 16 years old. Many young people worked as house maids or farm hands in order to earn money to get married - the average marrying age for girls seems to be 21 and for boys 23. With 4 other children in the house, Marij may have started working early in order to give her mother, who may have been sickly with 4 other children at home, the youngest 6, one less person to take care of. Her mother died 2 years later.

Marij married 2 Claes Cornelisz Oostwouder, originally from Hoogkarspel but living in Andijk, on Feb 18 1790 in Andijk. He died on Feb 18 1790. His first two wives were Trijntje Louwes Pan (June 4 1752 in Hoogkarspel) and Meinoutje Lowes Pan (March 3 1754 in Hoogkarspel).

The following Marij Jacobs were baptized in Andijk between 1720 and 1740, the most likely time our Marij would have been baptized:

1. Marij to Jacob Buijsman and Marijtje Tijs on December 12 1728. Parents: Nanne Teunis Buisman & Sou Jacobs Buysman and Tijs Freecksz Coxen & Marij Pieters Bullooper.

2. Maritje to Jacob Spijker and Meijnou Cornelisse on October 24 1734. Parents Dirk Cornelisz Spicker & Geert Gerrits and Cornelis Jans Bakker & Lysbeth Jacobs Roosekrans,

3. Maritje to Jacob Maartensz Kruijer and Geertje Jans Wagenaar on May 6 1736. Marijte died Feb 1 1738.

4. Andijk records are missing between 1714 and 1725. Jacob Dirksz Buysman & Neel Cornelis married on January 19 1716 and had Trijn in 1723, Crelis in 1725, Pieter who died in 1727 and Aef in 1729; it seems he had a Marij around 1720.

The following Marij Jacobs were married about the time our Marij was married:

1. To Claas Sijmensz. Bakker on Dec 19 1745. Children: Bregje (1753), Jacob (1758), Aafje (1761). They are listed in a church membership list in 1761 with Marij having the last name Buisman.

2. To Pieter Teunisz Otsz Pool on March 9 1755. Children: Maartje (1755, married Pieterman Sijmonsz Groot), Teunis (1758-82), Trijntje (1761, married Cornelis Reindersz Cooyman), Marij’s father Jacob Buisman lived with them in the 1760 membership records.

3. To Teewis Jansz Raven on February 8 1761. Children: Jan (1761), Pieter (1763), Pieter (1765). This Marij was often marked as a Spijker.

Most of the children of the two Marij Buismans lived and got married. This happened very rarely in those days, especially with veepest (cattle-plague) happening. There were very few good doctors in smaller towns at this point. Most medical knowledge came from housewives who had picked up some things here and there.

The things that point the most strongly to Pieter Teunisz "Otsen" Pool marrying our Marij Jacobs Buisman:

1. In the 1760 church membership list of Andijk, Jacob Buisman is living with Pieter Otsen and Maertje Jacobs (see? I told you they were interchangeable). This would indicate our Marij Jacobs was one of the two Buismans.

2. Marij Buisman and Claas Simons Bakker were married in 1745, when our Marij was 16. While in very rare instances girls were married at 16, they were normally married between 20 and 26. Claas also lived until 1783 while our Marij married again twice (1755 and 1772). So they must have been different women. The best possibility for parents of the 2nd Marij are Jacob Dirksz Buijsman and Neel Cornelis and birth year a likely 1720 (Andijk's baptism records are missing for this time), thus making her the most likely Marij to marry Claas.

3. The names of the children. After taking out the names accounted for on the husbands' side of the family we have these: Jacob, Maartje & Cornelis for Jan Claasz Bakker and Maartje for Pieter Teunisz Pool. While both wives had a daughter Maartje (which doesn't help anything), the son's name Cornelis would indicate that his grandmother was Neel Cornelis (oldest children were often named after a great-grandparent in Andijk, and Cornelis was the oldest). Thus it would make the most sense for our Marij Jacobs Buijsman to be the one not with this grandmother, and be the one who married Pieter Pool.

There is one more piece of proof: notary documents. In the boedelscheiding of Trijn Pieters dated Aug 8 1763, Marij Jacobs Buisman is listed as the 2nd wife of Pieter Teunisz Otsz Pool, deceased, along with her children Marij, Teunis and Trijn. [1]
