Background and Analysis of the Birth and Names of Elisabeth Cassegrain

Marie Elisabeth Lacoste, mother of Marie Elizabeth Cassegrain of this profile, was baptized at Chambly on July 11, 1744. She was the daughter of Andre Lacoste Languedoc and Elisabeth Durand. On January 16, 1759 she was godmother at the baptism of her cousin Paul Languedoc. The godfather for this event was Paul Cassegrain Laplante, a soldier of the regiment of Guyenne. On December 11, 1759 Paul Cassegrain and Elisabeth Lacoste had a daughter baptized at Chambly as Marie Elisabeth Cassegrain. The priest wrote the "the father and mother intended to marry earlier" "SES PERE ET MERE QUI ONT LE DESSEIN DE SE MARIER LE PLUS TOT QUE FAIRE SE POURRA" . Their intention to marry may have been thwarted by Paul's military duties for the Guyenne regiment held the center of the battle line on September 13, 1759 on the Plains of Abraham when the French lost to the English forces. The godparents at the baptism were Elisabeth's uncle, Jean Baptiste Lacoste, and her own godmother, Marie Lesperance. The child was never again recorded as Elisabeth Cassegrain, and there were no other records concerning Paul Cassegrain, suggesting he returned to France with his regiment.

Eleven months later on November 4, 1760 Marie Elisabeth Languedoc married Jean Dubord St.Chaumont, who was from France. Her parents were listed as Andre Languedoc and Elisabeth Durand. Also in attendance at this ceremony were her uncle Jean Baptiste as well as Joseph Livernois. Almost five months later on March 18, 1761 Jean Dubord died at age thirty five. There were no children.

On January 11,1762 "Marie" Lacoste married Joseph Benoit dit Livernois at Chambly. Her parents were listed as Andre Lacoste Languedoc and Elisabeth Durand and she was noted to be the widow of "Jacques" Dubord.

Joseph Benoit was the son of Etienne Benoit and Marie Charlotte Charles. Joseph and Elisabeth had nine sons baptized at Chambly, and there were no daughters born of this union. On May 29, 1777 Joseph Benoit died. Marie Isabelle was born in 1759. Marie Isabelle Cassegrain ... She passed away in 1832

Marie Elisabeth Cassegrain would have been twenty five months old when her mother married Joseph Benoit and he would have been her "foster father". She was likely informally adopted into the Benoit dit LIvernois family and thus grew up using the Livernois name. After her marriage to Paul Benoit she hardly used the Benoit or Livernois names again. At the baptisms of her fourteen children she is listed as Elisabeth Benoit only four times, as Elisabeth Lacoste six times, as Elisabeth Chaumier twice and twice as Elisabeth with no surname. After 1799 she is identified on all fifteen baptismal, marriage and burial records of her children as Elisabeth or Isabelle Chaumier (spelled variously as Chaumier, Chaume, Choniere, Chausne, Chaumee and Chome). At her death of cholera (possibly from Cholera) on August 21, 1832 at St. Mathias she is listed as Elisabeth Chaumier, spouse of Paul Benoit, aged seventy five years old. This age is slightly incorrect (it actually should be almost seventy three years) but tends to confirm she was born before the January 1762 marriage of Joseph Benoit dit Livernois and Elisabeth Lacoste.

(Thanks and acknowledgements to Mr. Fred Benoit who posted his Benoit research and contribution on GENENEALOY.com in 2010. Mr Fred Benoit’s contribution on January 10, 2015 has been archived at http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/benoit/2616/. My attempts to contact him via Ancestry.com have not been fruitful. I have done my best to verified names, dates and events in this biography using the PRDH). Mary Beth Mylott

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Élisabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Élisabeth:

FROM THE PRDH: First marriage 1778-05-11 Chambly with PAUL BENOIT
posted by Mary Beth Mylott
her marriage is some time before 17 Dec 1780, which is the date of the first child born to her that is showing up on a search of Drouin. There are six children listed, only one of which is not baptized at Pointe-Olivier (St-Mathias), but at Chambly. The two places are quite close together. And since her mother dies in St-Mathias, it is probable that her wedding was there also, or else at Chambly church.
