Middlesex County was established in 1800 and named for Middlesex, England. In 1827, and even later, the County extended from Lake Erie to Lake Huron, and from the line of Zone Township to the line of Burford, a tract now embracing the counties of Middlesex, Elgin, Oxford, Huron, Perth, and Bruce.

After 1841, see Middlesex County, Canada West.
