Biography

Flag of County Durham (adopted 2013)
Eleanor (Close) Goldsbrough was born in County Durham, England.

Birth

Eleanor gives her birthplace as Hurworth on the Barrington baptisms of her children and on census records. There are several baptisms for children of Edward and Ann Close at Hurworth in the correct time frame but it's hard to fit Eleanor in this family.

Marriage

William Goldsborough married Elinor Close at Hurworth on 23 Nov 1803. The marriage was by banns, bachelor and spinster. [1] Witnesses were Charles Hunter and Ann Goldsbrough. [Note: Goldsborough in the register, but both William and the witness Ann both signed Goldsbrough.] [2]

Children

William and Eleanor had at least the following children - all baptised at Hurworth-on-Tees:

  1. Dorothy (Goldsbrough) Eagle (1804-1869)
  2. George Goldsbrough (1806-1873)
  3. Mary (Goldsbrough) Anderson (1808-)
  4. William Goldsbrough (1809-)
  5. Eleanor (Goldsbrough) Richardson (bef.1813-1882)
  6. Anne Goldsbrough (1815-1816)
  7. John Goldsbrough (1817-)
  8. Jane (Goldsbrough) Wood (1821-abt.1861)
  9. Anne (Goldsbrough) Johnson (bef.1824-)

William's occupation was given as a weaver and both he and Eleanor were native of Hurworth.
