Biography

Willem was a son of Willem Willemse van Couwenhoven and Annetie Lucasse Van Voorhees, born on 22 January 1713. He married Margaret Schenck. They lived in New Jersey.[1]

He died in 1747, between 17 February, when he made his will, and 11 September 1747, when the will was proved. The will, dated 17 February 1746/7, of William Covenhoven, Jr., yeoman, of New Windsor, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, mentioned children William, Garret, Ann, Nelly, Sarah, and David, all under age. The estate included both real and personal estate. Executors were to be his wife, Margaret; William Covenhoven of Flat Lands, Long Island; and Albert Schank, of Pennsneck. Witnesses were Albert Schanck, Cornelius Covenhoven, Derrick Sutphen, Joseph Skelton.[2][3]

His father's will (written in 1757) provided that his grandson, Willem Kowenhoven, Jr., son of his eldest son Willem, deceased, should receive £5 for his birthright. In addition, the sons and daughters of son Willem, deceased, were to have their father's share of the estate, but because his youngest daughter Sarah was dead, her child was to have her share.[4]

In the next generation an unknown Covenhoven marries Sarah Hankinson-480. For the benefit of anyone dropping in, this era of Hankinson/Hankins family history suffers from a great deal of surname confusion because some shortened it and some did not. They're all the same family. True Hankinses (I'm a changeling) were first in VA, but of course NJ Hankinsons moved down there and shortened...
