Biography

Jacques was baptized on May 1, 1746, at Tremoins, the son of Jean-Nicholas Darey and Susanne Jacot Darey.

Though we have no record of the specifics or hardships endured by him and his family, we do know that at some point they took up the offer from the British government of free land to German Protestants to immigrate to Nova Scotia. He arrived at Halifax on July 14th, 1752 aboard the Betty, the sea portion of the trip from Rotterdam to Halifax taking 68 days.[1]

On October 20, 1772 he married Catherine Langille at St. Anthonys Anglican Church, Lunenburg Nova Scotia.

Punch notes that he is living in the Northwest Range in 1795, but does not record a death date for him.

No further information for this man is included in Montbéliard Emigrations and no information is included that indicates that he or his parents were Huguenot. Some of his descendants may claim Huguenot heritage through family oral traditions and lore.

Research Notes

  • rootsweb.ancestry.com/-canns/Lunenburg lists witnesses at "James" and "Catherine's" wedding as Leopold Langille and George Fred Bailly[2]<--- Busted link but should be followed-up on.
  • James is not a name that appears in records for Jacques. He does have a son, James Frederick
  • More on the removal of the Huguenot Immigrant information - These immigrants came from the Duchy of Wurtemburg, Germany at the time. There were Huguenots who passed through Montbéliard on their way to other places, but Montbéliard was not a source for Huguenot immigrations. These Immigrants are called Foreign Protestants and more information about them can be found here: https://archives.novascotia.ca/genealogy/foreign-protestants

Dare-207 and Dorey-129 appear to represent the same person because: There is an existing profile for Jaques Dare-207 which is Dorey-129. There is a lot of discussion about Dorey, Dore, Dare, Dares and Daree (Dares is listed in birth records for the kids born in St. Johns Anglican Church Parish, Nova Scotia) as the surname for this family. Merging this profile into the existing will make trying to find some clarification into this family easier. The new profile will carry Dorey since Dorey was the first profile on WikiTree for him, but Dare will appear in the other surnames field. Once the arguments over the appropriate surname are ended and a name agreed upon it can be changed to it. :-)

Hey Brendan,

There is an existing profile for Jaques which is Dorey-129. There is a lot of discussion about Dorey, Dore, Dare, Dares and Daree (Dares is listed in most of the birth record for the kids born in St. :-)

I am going to initiate a merge.
