Mary Edmondson married James Webb in 1731. Mary and James had ten known children, four of whom died very young.[1]

Their children were:[2]

  2. James - born 2 July 1734
  3. Mary - born 4 October 1736, died 6 September 1739

  9. Thomas - born 27 February 1751
  10. Elizabeth - born 30 June 1754

Her will was written on 7 October 1789 and named "my four surviving children: William Webb, John Webb, Mary Smith & Elizabeth Vass." Her will was recorded in Granville County, North Carolina, in February 1795.[3]

Slaves

When her husband died in 1771, Mary inherited five enslaved people: James, Will, Jack, Frank, and Hannah. In the time between 1773 and 1777, Frank fathered an additional two people: Amos and Joe. On 21 November 1777, Mary divided these enslaved people among her children. (Her son Thomas Webb took his share of the inheritance in cash.) Mary had inherited these enslaved people for her lifetime, but apparently decided to make this estate division while she was still alive.[4]
  1. James to her son John Webb
  2. Will to her son James Webb
  3. Jack to her son William Webb
  4. Frank to her daughter Elizabeth Webb
  5. Hannah to her daughter Mary (Webb) Smith
  6. Amos (son of Frank) to her son John Webb
  7. Joe (son of Frank to her daughter Elizabeth Webb

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
