Her will was written on 7 October 1789 and named "my four surviving children: William Webb, John Webb, Mary Smith & Elizabeth Vass." Her will was recorded in Granville County, North Carolina, in February 1795.[3]
Slaves
When her husband died in 1771, Mary inherited five enslaved people: James, Will, Jack, Frank, and Hannah. In the time between 1773 and 1777, Frank fathered an additional two people: Amos and Joe. On 21 November 1777, Mary divided these enslaved people among her children. (Her son Thomas Webb took his share of the inheritance in cash.) Mary had inherited these enslaved people for her lifetime, but apparently decided to make this estate division while she was still alive.[4]
