Clara Mae Ellis was the sixth daughter in a family of 10. The eighth child was the only male. One wonders if she was lost in so many girls.


1900 census. Camp Hill, Tallapoosa Co, AL. Clara M, 2 years old is listed with her parents, 5 older sisters and one sister younger. 1

1910 census. Chambers Co, Alabama. Clara, 12, is living with her parents, eight sisters, i brother, her grandmother and her aunt. 1

Clara was counted twice in the 1920 census, January 5, 1920 while attending college in Columbus, Georgia and June 12, 1920 at home in Camp Hill, Alabama. 1

1920 census. Columbus, Muscogee Co, Georgia Clara, 23 and single, is living at 930 Third Avenue, around the corner from B. C. Blair. Is this where they met?. She was living alone. She had been a student at sometime since Sept 1, 1919. Where was she in college? She was working for wages as a saleswoman in retail dry goods. 1 census. Camp Hill, Tallapoosa Co, AL. Clara has returned home from college and is living with her parents, George, Sarah and Rosa Lee. 1

Grama's family had orchards. Jane remembers that her mother was warned not to eat the green plums. She did anyway and got very sick. She learned the hard way as we all have to do sometimes. 1

1935. Grandmother was pregnant with Davis, her fourth child, when her father died.


In later years, Clara lived on Bankhead Avenue and Moreland Avenue in Atlanta. 1 1962, she was living at 849 N. Center Hill Avenue, NW, Atlanta, Georgia She was a member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, the Riverside Council No. 13, Daughters of America, the Rebekahs, and the American Legion Auxiliary. 1

Clara was very intelligent, clever and industrious. At a time in their early marriage when the family had little money she hand stitched a suit for her husband. She also loved to make hats and was very good at it. At one time she wanted to open a millinery shop but it never happened. 1 died of a melanoma which began as a mole on her face. She was a practical nurse and was working at a nursing home. One of the patients pinched the mole. The mole began changing and she ignored it for a very long time. Finally she had several operations. She was moved to a Catholic nursing home, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Atlanta, Fulton Co, when Jane became unable to care for her. She was there 1 month and 25 days. 1

She was the sixth girl in a family of 10 children. The ninth child was a boy. She was very talented. She made beautiful hats. One time her husband got a job that required a suit. Money was tight so she made his suit. 1 had 4 children. 1
